About HIV / AIDS and Medical Cannabis

HIV/AIDS is explicitly listed as a qualifying condition under Washington's RCW 69.51A. Patients living with HIV or AIDS who are managing symptoms such as nausea, appetite loss, pain, and anxiety are eligible to seek a medical marijuana evaluation with a licensed Washington State physician. All evaluations are conducted with complete confidentiality under HIPAA.

Why Patients with HIV / AIDS Seek a Medical Cannabis Evaluation

Patients living with HIV/AIDS commonly seek medical cannabis evaluations to explore additional options for managing symptoms including appetite changes, nausea, neuropathic pain, and anxiety. Medical cannabis has been examined in the context of HIV care since the early days of the epidemic, and it remains one of the most studied patient populations in cannabis medicine. Your evaluating physician can discuss current evidence and what it may mean for your individual situation.

This information is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Authorization requires an evaluation by a licensed Washington State physician who will determine whether medical cannabis is appropriate for your individual situation.

What to Expect at Your Evaluation

Your HIV/AIDS diagnosis is your primary qualification. Bring records from your infectious disease specialist or primary care physician if available — they're helpful but not required. Your physician will review your current antiretroviral regimen and other medications and discuss whether medical cannabis is appropriate for your individual case.

What to bring: Valid Washington State ID or driver's license (required). Medical records related to your hiv / aids are helpful but optional.

Common Questions About HIV / AIDS and Medical Cannabis

Can cannabis interact with my antiretroviral medications?

Some antiretroviral medications — particularly those metabolized by CYP450 enzymes — can interact with cannabis. Our physicians are familiar with these interactions and will review your full medication list at your appointment.

Is my evaluation fully confidential?

Yes. Your evaluation is protected under HIPAA, Washington's Patient Privacy Act, and RCW 69.51A. We do not share information with employers, insurers, or any third party without your written consent.

Do I need to disclose my HIV status to get an evaluation?

You share only what's relevant to your evaluation. Our physicians handle all patient information with full confidentiality and without judgment.

How does a medical card affect my cannabis costs?

Medical cardholders are exempt from Washington's 37% cannabis excise tax and local sales tax on qualifying DOH-compliant products — a significant ongoing savings for regular cannabis users.
