How to Register with the WA DOH Medical Marijuana Database

After your Green Wellness evaluation, you have a written authorization that's valid immediately. Registering with the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) is optional but unlocks important benefits. Here's how to do it.

Why register?

• Tax exemption — registered patients are exempt from WA's 37% cannabis excise tax and local sales taxes (up to 47% total savings)
• Higher possession limits — registered patients can possess up to 3 oz usable cannabis, 48 oz cannabis-infused product, and 21 grams concentrate (vs. 1 oz for unregistered patients)
• Home cultivation — registered patients can grow up to 6 plants at home
• Legal recognition — registered patients have stronger legal protections under Washington State law

Step-by-step registration

1. Visit mmjr.doh.wa.gov (Washington State Medical Marijuana Authorization database)
2. Create a patient account using the email address associated with your authorization
3. Upload your written authorization document (emailed to you after your Green Wellness appointment)
4. Upload a valid government-issued photo ID
5. Pay the $1 registration fee
6. Your recognition card is mailed within a few weeks

Do I need the card before visiting a dispensary?

No — your written authorization is valid at any licensed WA dispensary immediately after your appointment. You don't need to wait for the recognition card to make purchases. However, you'll need to be registered (even if the card hasn't arrived) to receive the tax exemption — check with your dispensary on their verification process.

How long does registration take?

The online registration takes about 10 minutes. Your account is activated immediately, but the physical recognition card typically arrives within 2–4 weeks by mail.

Annual renewal

Your registration in the MMED database is tied to your authorization. When you renew your authorization with Green Wellness, upload your new authorization document to the MMED portal to keep your registration active.
